The first
evidence of Roman settlement dates all the way back to about 900 BCE. From that
point in time to about 117 BCE, Rome became one of the most powerful nations in
the entire world. In their route to power, the Romans conquered several large
territories. Once they captured those lands they often absorbed various
cultures and customs. Rome adopted several ideals from the Ancient Greeks. Using
those concepts, the Ancient Romans became extremely skillful in engineering,
art, and architecture.
The Ancient Romans may have used other nations’ ideas to do things such as create the ideal proportion for the arhitecture of their land, but they also impacted the evolution of art with their own brilliance and innovativeness. They knew how to combine diverse cultures with their own in order to revolutionize art and improve architecture. Romans also helped integrate concrete and stone into architecture. They also improved structures such as the arches and they focused on people of their society, such as emperors and civic leaders in their art, instead of just gods and mythological heroes like Greeks had done.
How the Ancient Romans intertwined all those ideas has definetly had an extraordinary influence on modern art. They transcended art and taught others how important art and architecture could be. In creating this gallery I hope to give others the opportunity to view these amazing pieces. In doing that i hope to get them to appreciate art and how it communicates with us. The images I chose to include in this vintage gallery are some of Ancient Rome’s greatest masterpieces and truly exemplify the talent and skill of the Ancient Romans.
